WORLD EXCLUSIVE! Are You A Geek, A Nerd, Or A Dork? FIND OUT HERE!
by Bruce Edwards
"...the (g)eek shall inherit the Earth"--Psalms 37:7
(kind of)
Welcome to GEEKLOPEDIA, the new column where we cleverly define everything under the warm rays of the Great Geek Sun, in any and all aspects of Assorted Geekery! Be it movies, comics, toys, books, or video games, we have strong opinions, and we're gonna let you know how to think about them! Don't agree? Let us know. But it doesn't mean you're going to be right. Each new article will introduce a new term/idea to the Geeklopedia, so sit down, strap in, and get ready to have the Geek Hive Mind reorganized the way it should have been all along...
People, people, people. We are a community. As a community, we need to recognize some shared nomenclature in order to communicate as efficently and clearly as possible. And one of the places we seem to have a lot of confusion is in the usage of the terms Geek, Nerd, and Dork (or Dweeb).
These are wholly seperate--though at first glace similar--terms. There are, of course, examples of people that run the gamut; there are geeks who bleed into dorkiness and nerds who can hold their own as geeks (kind of like a Venn Diagram of Geekdom, which is an example of Nerdiness bleeding into my Geekiness), but if you fall mainly into one area or another, you need to know what you are, and we all need to recognize these terms in order to best contribute to the overall health and well-being of our delightful community of fablously smart people who are currently ruling the pop culture/entertainment roost. Because, truly, if you missed the whole Bill-Gates-defined-the-21st-Century-and-changed-the-world-thing, well, then you're probably a hopeless Dork. Or Dweeb.
